AUTHORITY AND COURT OF AUDIT MEETING

On November 8th, 1996, a meeting was held at the Italian Competition Authority's, with the participation of the Court of Audit's (the highest judicial body which exercises control and jurisdiction over matters of public accounting and pensions) representatives and the Authority's officials. The meeting, opened by the Court's President Giuseppe Carbone, and closed by Giuliano Amato, Authority's President, focused on the role of the national and community antitrust legislations as principles of legitimacy that the Court can takes into account while practising its activity.

In the course of the meeting, it was noted that the Court's control over the public administrations can also be extended to the aspects concerning the compatibility of the relevant legislations and firm's behaviours with competition principles, even in relation to state aids. Furthermore, it was said that the Court can collaborate effectively with the Authority to restrain anti-competitive firm's behaviour.

Lastly, meeting's participants examined the antitrust legislation enforcement on the sectors subject to regulation and, in particular, on the public utilities sector.
 This meeting is the first of a series of initiatives aimed to strengthen the collaboration between the
two institutions.
