TIM-OMNITEL FIXED-MOBILE CHARGES

PRESS RELEASE

The Antitrust Authority is investigating TIM and Omnitel

At its meeting on 7th January 1999, the Antitrust Authority began an investigation into Telecom Italia Mobile and Omnitel Pronto Italia, to ascertain the existence of agreements to restrict competition on the mobile telephony market.
On 6th January 1999 these two companies had simultaneously introduced identical charges for calls from the Telecom Italia public fixed telephone network to subscribers to their respective mobile networks for each user type and time band, and for the amount charged upon replying.
The Authority considered that the fact that Telecom Italia Mobile and Omnitel Pronto Italia had set identical conditions, and other similarities that are frequently found in the various services offered to subscribers and to other telecommunications operators, might be the result of agreements based on accords or concerted practices, and that these agreements might be intended to substantially restrict or distort competition on the mobile communications services market, thereby constituting an offence under Section 2(2) of the Antitrust Act.
