PRESS RELEASE
The Competition Authority has opened an investigation into the UMTS tender
On 26 October 2000 the Competition Authority resolved to open an investigation to ascertain whether competition legislation had been breached by the following companies: Telecom Italia Mobile, Omnitel Pronto Italia, Wind Telecommunicazioni, Andala OPCO, Ipse 2000 and Blu.
The object of the investigation is to see whether the unusual course and the outcome of the competitive tender for the UMTS licences were due to concerted practices or agreements concluded between the tenderers, with the intention to effect of restricting competition on the market for the acquisition of licences for third generation mobile telephony services.
