PRESS RELEASE
Parallel investigations by the Bank of Italy and the Competition Authority

On Wednesday, 7 February, two investigations began under section 14 of the Competition Act into the credit card market: the Competition Authority has begun an investigation of Servizi Interbancari, American Express e Diners, while the Bank of Italy is investigating Servizi Interbancari, Deutsche Bank, CARIPLO, Banca Nazionale del Lavoro and Findomestic Banca.

The specific issues under investigation are: a) the commissions which traders pay to the banks for payments made by credit card, and b) the conditions governing relations between the card-holders and the card-issuers.

The Competition Authority has carried out inspections on the premises of Servizi Interbancari, American Express and Diners, and the Bank of Italy is currently inspecting Deutsche Bank, CARIPLO, Banca Nazionale del Lavoro and Findomestic Banca.

Both investigations are scheduled for completion by 31 January 2002.
