FOOTBALL LEAGUE FINED FOR PLAY-OFF AND
PLAY-OUT TICKET PRICING
The Italian Competition Authority, at its meeting on 23 November 2005, imposed a minimum fine of 2000 euros on the Lega Nazionale Professionisti [National Professional Soccer League] for having reached an anti-competitive arrangement in fixing ticket prices for the play-off and play-out matches for the Italian Serie B championship in the 2004/05 season.
In determining the size of the fine, the Authority took the League's conduct into account: immediately after the inquiry was begun, the League clarified in a circular that the prices were to be considered indicative only, leaving the clubs free to set different categories of prices. This action greatly lessened the seriousness of the alleged violation by eliminating the consequences of the setting of ticket prices for the play-off and play-out matches for the 2004/05 championship. Furthermore, in the current season, the League has avoided any interference in the setting of ticket prices for the play-off and play-out matches which will be staged at the end of the 2005/06 championship.
