ANTITRUST: THREE NEW DIRECTORATES SET UP, ONE TO DEAL WITH CONSUMER PROTECTION

The Antitrust Authority is being reorganised. The Italian Competition Authority, chaired by Antonio Catricalà, decided at its meeting on 29 March 2006 to make a number of changes to the structure of its directorates as of 10 April next.
Three new Directorates will be set up: the Competition Directorate headed up by Alberto Nahmjias, who has also been appointed Deputy Secretary General, the Consumer Protection Directorate and the Resources Directorate.
The Competition Directorate will have the investigative branches reporting to it: there will five of these instead of seven. Each of them will deal with a different market sector, including the credit sector, a responsibility acquired recently when the new banking law came into force.
The Resources Directorate will instead be responsible for all aspects of personnel and administration, but also information resources and technology services.
The Consumer Protection Directorate under Francesca Ferri is something entirely new with respect to the past. This new organizational unit will be responsible for coordinating the already existing Directorate of Misleading and Comparative Advertising and the Office for evaluating the impact on consumers of antitrust policies.
There will be no change to the responsibilities of the Research Directorate and the External Relations Directorate.
