FOOTBALL: ANTITRUST AUTHORITY SEES PISA’S INDEPENDENT SALE OF PLAY-OFF TV RIGHTS AS FIRST EFFECT OF INVESTIGATION INTO THE LEAGUE

The independent sale by the Pisa club of the TV rights to its play-off matches is a first result of the Italian Competition Authority’s investigation into the Football League (Lega Calcio). This was the Antitrust Authority’s assessment at its meeting on 29 May 2008 of the agreement which will make possible pay-per-view broadcasts of the Tuscan team’s home games. The investigation, which is still ongoing, was launched on 10 April last to assess whether the Lega Calcio, by way of decisions at the association level or otherwise, limited the freedom of football’s Serie B teams to sell the TV rights to their matches independently, which might constitute anti-competitive conduct.
