JOINT PRESS RELEASE

Fact-finding investigation into SMS/MMS and mobile data services

The Italian Communications Authority and the Italian Competition Authority have launched a joint investigation into  SMS (short message services), MMS (multimedia messaging services) and data services on mobile networks.

In 2007, the markets in question had total revenues in Italy of approximately 4 billion euros (€2.49 billion for SMS and €1.61 bn for MMS and mobile data services). The two Authorities intend to gather and analyse information and documentation having to do with the prices of these services and the way in which they are sold.

The SMS, MMS and mobile data markets are characterized by numerous packaged plans offered for the different categories of user; within these, the average cost of individual services may vary widely. The conditions offered, and the transparency and competitiveness of the plans will therefore be examined with a view to better protecting consumers and users.
