Trenitalia makes changes in its booking systems expanding the number of travel solutions offered to consumers in response to the Italian Competition Authority’s measure

PRESS RELEASE

Last July, the Italian Competition Authority (“ICA”) sanctioned Trenitalia S.p.a. for an unfair commercial practice put in place through the company’s telematic system for searching and purchasing train tickets. This system is available to customers on the company’s website, through self-service ticket machines at train stations and the Trenitalia App for smartphones and tablets.
In order to implement the ICA’s measure, Trenitalia presented some changes to its telematic system for searching and purchasing travel tickets – now being tested - which the ICA deemed appropriate to overcome the deceptive and omissive aspects of the censored commercial practice. Indeed, these changes make Trenitalia’s telematic system display a much wider set of travel solutions for a given route than before, including the best Intercity and Regional train solutions, especially when selecting the ‘Main Solutions’ search option.
Within the next ten weeks, Trenitalia will have to submit a report to the ICA on the definitive implementation of the aforementioned changes on its online search engine.
