Elisabetta Iossa

Commissioner of the Italian Competition Authority

Elisabetta Iossa has served as Commissioner of the Italian Competition Authority since 1 February 2022.

She is a Full Professor of Economics (currently on leave) at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” and has held academic positions across Europe, including at Université de Liège (maître de conférences), Université Libre de Bruxelles (suppléant), and Brunel University in West London, where she was Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Full Professor. Over the years, she has also been a visiting scholar at renowned institutions such as the University of Bristol, Università Cattolica of Milan, Harvard University, and the Toulouse School of Economics.

Her research centres on industrial economics, with a focus on competition policy, public procurement and public-private partnerships. On these topics, she has advised numerous international institutions, including the European Commission, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, UK Competition Commission, UK Financial Services Authority, OECD, Office of Fair Trading (UK), IFAD-United Nations, Inter-American Development Bank and World Bank.

Ms. Iossa is currently a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London and at CEIS, the Centre for Economic and International Studies at Tor Vergata University in Rome. She previously held a research fellowship at the GREEN research centre of Bocconi University and served on the Executive Committee of the European Association for Research in Industrial Economics.

She holds an MSc in Economics from the University of York and a PhD in Political Economy from the University of Naples “Federico II”. Her academic achievements earned her a Marie Curie-funded postdoctoral fellowship under the T.M.R. program, which she completed at ECARES, Université Libre de Bruxelles.

Elisabetta Iossa has published extensively in internationally renowned academic journals. Her work has appeared in: American Economic Journal: Microeconomics, Games and Economic Behavior, Economic Journal, Journal of the European Economic Association, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Journal of Industrial Economics, Journal of Economics and Management Strategy, Journal of Law, Economics and Organization, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Journal of Public Economics, Rand Journal of Economics, Review of Economic Studies.
