Giovanni Calabrò

Head of Cabinet

Giovanni Calabrò was appointed Head of Cabinet of the Italian Competition Authority on 6 June 2023.  

His career at the Authority spans more than three decades. He joined in 1991, following earlier positions at Arthur Andersen and CONSOB, the Italian Companies and Stock Exchange Commission. Between 1994 and 1995, he worked in Brussels before returning to the Authority to focus on financial services. Over the years, he gained experience in several key sectors, including telecommunications, postal services, energy and industry – ultimately leading the latter sector before being appointed Director of the Credit Division in 2006.

In 2008, he became Director General for Competition, overseeing major investigations, including those involving mergers in the banking and insurance sectors. He went on to serve as Director General for Consumer Protection starting in 2012.

From January until his appointment as Head of Cabinet in June 2023, he served as Head of the Authority’s Legal Affairs Department.

Mr. Calabrò is a frequent speaker at national conferences and seminars on competition and consumer protection. He also lectures in advanced training programs, including:

  • Advanced Course for Senior Officers of the Italian Financial Police (Guardia di Finanza)
  • Master’s Programme in Competition and Innovation Law at LUISS School of Law, Rome
  • Executive Programme in Consumer Relations Management: quality, safety and communication at LUISS Business School, Rome
